Framed!

Going by what my fellow photographer friend CrystalChick has started doing, I thought it was a great idea and thought why not!

I would LOVE to see what my photos look like framed and on my client’s walls! Here is the first one, only because I framed it and took this shot before they came to pick it up! :-)

You may remember this couple… we met together in early May (already two months ago!) to capture engagement photos. Well, tomorrow I get to capture their wedding and I am SO looking forward to it! ♥

Jess & Jason’s Engagement

I’ve known Jessica my whole life. We grew up together because we’re only four months apart and our moms were best friends. And they’ve known each other since high school!

It was a pleasure to meet Jason, the love of Jessica’s life. I first met him about six months ago, shortly after they got engaged. What a great guy! Having known Jessica as long as I have I’m not surprised she landed such a gentleman. :-)

We agreed to meet on May 23rd for their engagement photos. I only had an hour to capture all the images because she & I had to rush off to her bridal shower right after! And I’m not sure if he was joking, but Jason suggested an hour was too long anyways- “Fifteen shots and we’re done, right?” HA! :-)

Anyways, the hour went fast as they always do, and thankfully the weather cooperated! Earlier that day it looked as if the skies would open up and soak us, but that’s to be expected in the spring & summer season.

As I went through the photos I took that day, I couldn’t help but smile. I’m really looking forward to their wedding day coming this October!

Jess & Jason, you guys are truly an adorable couple. ♥ Thanks for choosing me as your photographer!

Northern Bruce Peninsula

A month ago I was back up north in the Bruce Peninsula. It’s truly a beautiful place at any time of year! Last time you’ll remember I was there in February for the family day long weekend. Everything was covered in ice and snow. In May, everything has grown and is so fresh. I think Spring is my favourite season of them all. Especially in May, when the Provincial flower of Ontario, the trillium, is in full bloom. They only last a couple weeks and it’s always in May.

Little Girl Chloe

Meet Chloe. She’s got the biggest eyes, and she’s gotta be the most polite child under the age of two that I know!
A few weekends ago, her mom (Liz) and I went out for lunch to catch up. During our lunch I think Chloe spent more time examining and studying me as she’s never really met me before :-) She only fussed a little bit, but it was around the time to be leaving Swiss Chalet anyways.
After our lunch we headed outside so I could capture a few images of this little princess. Thankfully, we didn’t have to go far as there was a lush green space just beside the parking lot!

Thanks, Liz & Chloe for a great afternoon! I had a blast with you both :-)

A little humour…

Taken from the ICHC website (aka LOLCats), I present to you:

A JAYPG photo

*not my photo, but I wish it was!

my very first shoot

I bought my first DSLR in August 2006, the Canon EOS 20D that came with an accessory kit (battery grip, extra battery and camera bag). Before that, all my photos had come from an HP Photosmart P&S, then I purchased the Canon A610 model. The rest is history!
…I’m just kidding. I still use the A610 occasionally. It saves space and it’s almost idiot-proof, so I know that when I hand it off to friends or family to take a photo, they know what they’re doing nine times out of ten. ;-)

Getting back to the point of this post… my very first shoot I guess would be in November of that year, 2006. A friend of mine asked me to take their family portraits. I was stoked! It was my first paid job (almost embarrassing to say, it was less than 3 years ago that I’ve been doing this for money!)

Before heading out for my first session, I prepared and printed a contract (even though these were friends, I still wanted to bring professionalism to the table - and anyone in business will tell you that you should always write up a contract when money is involved. I will write a post about contracts in the near future including legal experiences.

I cleaned my equipment, formatted memory cards, folded up my tripod, and reviewed my notes. I was ready to go!

Below are two of the photos from that family portrait session. Something I learned? Always watch for distractions in the background! :-)

Krista & Greg’s Engagement

The day began with glorious sunshine. By the time I met up with Krista & Greg to shoot their engagement photos, the rain was threatening. Clouds were just looming over us, which gave a soft glow on them! However, moments after I captured this image, the sky opened up! :-)

Thankfully, Krista & Greg were in good spirits! Their wedding is only two months away (already!) and it’s hard to discourage either of them with anything. The happy couple, with whom I’ve been friends for a few years, got themselves engaged under a fireworks celebration last summer. Greg had purchased the ring right in front of Krista while touring Thailand, and she had no idea! That takes some serious skill for sure!

We had a great time together dodging rain drops and working with the rain -and sunshine, when it decided to shine! It was definitely a challenge for me as I’ve never shot portraits in the rain before.

This is a teaser photo! There are many more to come later this week!

Pleased to announce…

Finally - I got a professional looking website. Finally.

I think my photos look so much better when they’re properly displayed!

To kick off the launch, send me an email (using the *new* contact form, of course) with “LAUNCH SPECIAL” in the subject line for a special treat!

New Website!

Frida’s Garden

Last June I spent some time in a beautiful garden maintained by a friend. I had to hurry though, because the rain was coming and I could smell it in the air. Thankfully because of the rain clouds, the sun light was diffused and it gave the photos a beautiful soft glow.

I was also invited to be a photographer for Tour A Garden, a public tour of three to five residential gardens in the City of Waterloo. The annual event happens in June and any one can purchase a ticket to visit the selected gardens. When I get more information for this year’s Tour, I’ll be sure to post about it here.

Downtown Toronto

On Saturday morning, a group of Flickr photographer friends & I made the trek to Toronto to wander around and capture some images of the downtown core. Needless to say, I was the first to arrive (in exactly one hour, driveway-to-parking lot on Queens Quay!) and no one else was there. At first I thought everyone else was already out wandering, but just as I looked up I saw a Flickr friend in my rearview mirror. Sweet.

Seven of us started out at Queens Quay & Rees Street parking lot at 8:30, costing each car a whopping $15 for the day. Sheesh. I remember when that lot was free. Oh well, c’est la vie.

We walked down Front Street, Spadina, Chinatown, through Kensington Market, down Bay Street, then back across Front Street, and a stop in at Steam Whistle Brewery. Total time: 5 hours. Wow! Our legs & feet were aching by the time we got back to our cars, but by that time our group had dwindled down to three people.

I still had energy and a positive attitude to keep going, but somewhere else: the airport. Jenn & her husband followed me down the expressway up and around Pearson International, where we finally settled along Dixie Road in a no-stopping zone. Also known as the best place to see planes fly over your head to land. It was awesome. Anyone stopping at the side of the road to see these mighty machines really understand how powerful the planes are. I find it fascinating and exhilarating! And not to mention scary - those planes aren’t coming in straight and narrow, they come in on an angle and are wobbly all the way down. Not very comforting when you’re standing in it’s path! If I could estimate, I would say we were approximately 300 feet below the planes. Insane, but I love it!

For more Downtown Toronto photos, and photos of the landing planes, check them out on my Flickr page!
